Blog post #3 Environmental Documentary Flim Review

A Plastic Ocean What makes a environmental film effective and persuasive? Footage: What they choose to show in the film can make it very persuasive towards one side. Targeted Audience: Whom the film marker chooses to target while producing the film can be a huge factor in making the film persuasive. The film A Plastic Ocean was a successful in persuading the viewer to recycle and not use single use plastics. They played on the ethos side at the beginning of the film when they showed shoots of sea life struggling due to plastic. Then they made the audience aware on the large scale of the accumulative plastics that are in our oceans by stating facts. This played with the logos appeal by giving the viewer those facts. Both these appeals where very effective throughout the whole film these are just small examples of how they were used. Thesis: A Plastic Ocean made me more aware that we are causing severe damage to our oceans by the litter of plastics. In the movie it starts ...

Just Another Day Running Errands Your standing in line with a cart full of groceries. impatiently waiting for your turn to get the items you selected scanned and bagged. The cashier asks a simple question, “Plastic or paper?”. You reply with saying you want plastic, simply because of sheer convince. Your items are packed and loaded as you head out the door on your way to continue on with your life. The average American throws away about 10 single use plastic bags per week. That’s 23 billion used just in the state of New York a year. This plastic that we use in the short time to carry food from the store to the home. Does Yosemite need a Starbucks For my first blog post I chose an article by Katherine Martinko entailed, "Does Yosemite need a Starbucks?". This article explains the frustration people are having with development around National Parks. They do not want a Starbucks to be built around Yosemite, because of the city like feel that brings to the park. Over 20,000 people have signed a petition trying to stop this from happening. They are rejecting the idea of a huge chain like Starbucks to be around a beautiful and wild place such as Yosemite. The fear is that development could lead to later on commercialization of National Parks. I think this article was bias of only explaining the reason for the petition and not how a Starbucks could benefit Yosemite. It was very one sided and didn't provide enough facts. I do think that development around a park, with a chain restaurant is a horrible idea. National parks should be kept separate from cities, that's the reason why they ...

I am currently a sophomore at Southern Utah University. I like to climb as much as possible, reason for me attending SUU. I took this class because I have a passion for the outdoors and would love to learn more about environmental issues. When it comes to political issues on the environment, I know little to nothing. This course should be very interesting.
